The Ten Commandments Of Employment... 1. If it rings, put it on hold. 2. If it clunks, call the repairman. 3. If it whistles, ignore it. 4. If it's a friend, stop work and chat. 5. If it's the boss, look busy. 6. If it talks, take notes. 7. If it's handwritten, type it. 8. if it's typed, copy it. 9. If it's copied, file it. 10. If it's Friday, forget it!

Work is too serious joke a little!

Wow. Well thank you very much, Elizabeth.
I agree with your point about coming full circle on traditional communication standards. It's pretty easy to separate the quality people from the product pushers online.
I would add to your comment that time in social media requires both balance AND filtering. It fascinates me when people who don't use social media are dismissive -- or even disdainful -- of it as time-wasting noise, given its power as a communication tool, both personally and professionally, when used effectively.
Thanks again for your note.

This post offers the most well-balanced approach to this topic that I've ever seen. Like everything else worthwhile, there's always a balance, and sometimes we've got to slip out of balance one way or another to find our own balance point.

The thing I love most about social media (and I'm 59 years old, so didn't grow up with it!) is that the ones who are doing it right have, in my opinion, come full circle back to old fashioned business values of communication, listening, authenticity, ethical behavior, and providing value.

Thanks for interjecting this voice of reason into what has been unnecessarily a polarizing issue.

Merci, Diane. (I saw that you're 50/50 English/French...trust me, you don't want me attempting more than a "merci"...it just isn't "jolie").
This post was a definite mental trackback to my entree into the space... I respect "privacy" concerns, but it's a pity to see people use them as a reason not to participate at all...especially when these platforms and tools are becoming increasingly integrated with business.
I will be taking a deeper dive into online privacy matters in part deux of deux.
Thanks for the comment and the Twitter post.

Great question! Social Media falls into a larger umbrella called "Inbound Marketing." Traditionally marketing would be 1) cold calls/ telemarketing 2) print marketing such as magazines or newspapers 3) radio advertising 4) TV advertising 5) outdoor advertising. The before mentioned techniques would be labeled as "Outbound Marketing."

90% offline, 10% online I've met some interesting people here and have lively email correspondences with several, telephone conversations with others. Y!A, though flawed, has I think achieved many desirable ends

This article made me feel good and brought back nice memories. I remember being lost on Twitter, on Facebook, on all these social networks. But as you've said, it is after a first real conversation with someone I knew or someone that became a Web friend, that all this social media stuff started to make sense. Social Media witout engaging into conversations, in my view, is not as worthy as when you feel that you have a voice, that someone is listening, that you are helping and that your contribution is appreciated by at last one person. Once you have that one person, there will soon be a second and then a third. And then you start understanding social media. Thanks for the great article.
